The Department of Biology in the College of Letters and Sciences at the University of Wisconsin - Whitewater seeks applications for a full-time split position with a 50% appointment as an Instructional Academic Staff and a 50% appointment as the department’s laboratory manager.

 

 

 

 

JOB DETAILS:

 

 

The Instructional Academic Staff position will serve as a lecturer and lab instructor as well as lab coordinator for our non-majors Biology 120 (Biological Foundations) course.  The position will also support the introductory labs (Biology 141 & 142), and depending on the background of the applicant, other biology-related courses. In the lab manager position, the applicant would be responsible for the organization, record keeping, and preparation and set-up for several non-majors, as well as monitoring student workers, maintaining lab-related supplies, supervising general lab maintenance and safety. 

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in a biological science

 

Desired Qualifications: 

  • Teaching experience at the university level.
  • Lab management related skills.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

 

Instructional Academic Staff position (50%, 20 hours a week)

Responsibilities:

Be present for approx. 7-8 hours of course time a week, 5 hours of in-person availability to students (office hours), with the remaining time spent on grading and course preparation.  This position is based on a 9-month contract.

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to engage and encourage students and interact with a variety of students from diverse backgrounds.
  • A background sufficient for teaching the content of introductory biology, as well as strong teaching skills, are expected. 
  • A familiarity with learning management systems, such as Canvas, D2L or Blackboard is desirable.

 

Lab Manager Position (50%, 20 hours a week):

Responsibilities:

Organize, implement, coordinate, and maintain the lab components of a biology department. Duties include maintaining the teaching and shared labs (in conjunction with the faculty), periodic lab set-up for certain courses, hiring, training, and supervising student workers, and ordering lab-related supplies in conjunction with our Departmental Assistant.  The position also oversees the supervision of shared equipment maintenance, as well as some light cleaning and periodic inspection of this equipment. The lab manager is responsible for coordinating and performing duties that promote lab safety, including assistance with the removal of hazardous wastes.  This position is based on a 12-month contract.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to work with students and faculty in Biology as well as related departments such as Chemistry. 
  • Ability to maintain inventories and keep records.
  • Strong communication and teaching skills.
  • A background in lab work or experience in a research or teaching lab is desirable. 
  • This position requires that the individual be present on campus when faculty and students are present. 
  • This position will need to communicate and collaborate with the Chemistry lab manager, as well as the campus safety officer and facilities and maintenance personnel.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

 

 

Well-qualified candidates can expect a starting annual salary within a range of $45,000 – $50,000
