Assistant Professor - Tenure-Track Position - Biology - 21240
ATTENTION:
The Department of Biology in the College of Letters and Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater seeks a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Biology with a strong desire to teach introductory level courses beginning August 2025.
This is a full-time position with responsibilities for teaching undergraduate courses in biology, conducting research, and providing service to the university and community. Research expertise should complement existing faculty expertise and may include biology education research.
JOB DETAILS:
The successful candidate will have a broad general background in biology with the pedagogical skills and expertise to effectively support the diverse needs of students, particularly at the introductory level. The primary teaching responsibilities will be in Introductory Biology (for majors and non-majors), as part of the Biology and General Education programs. The ideal candidate would also be able to provide additional coverage in courses such as Writing in Biology, Biostatistics, Human Anatomy & Physiology, or Microbiology. The candidate will be expected to pursue an active research agenda that engages undergraduate students and contributes to advancing the department, university, the profession, and society. The candidate will also be expected to participate in service activities as a member of the university community.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Qualifications:
- A Ph.D. in Biology, Biology Education, or a biological science is required. [ABD candidates may apply but must have their degree completed by the contract start date in August 2025; if not, they will be hired on a one-year contract with the understanding that their degree will be completed before January 2026 in advance of their first scheduled review.]
- Also required are a demonstrated commitment to teaching with an emphasis on promoting the success of undergraduate students, clear evidence of scholarly potential, and serving as an active member of the university community.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Full-Time teaching responsibilities may include Biological Foundations, Introductory Biology I/II, Writing in Biology, Biostatistics, Human Anatomy and Physiology I, and corresponding labs. Faculty at UW-W may be required to teach online and/or in a hybrid format, or courses in the evenings. Faculty may also elect to teach New Student Seminar or University Learning Communities, or participate in other programs geared toward improving student success.
- Research expectations include maintaining an active program of research leading to publications in peer-reviewed journals, research presentations. Grant activity is encouraged.
- Faculty members are expected to serve as academic advisors/mentors to students and to supervise undergraduate research students.
- Service responsibilities include committee service at the departmental, college, and university levels as well as participation in community organizations as relevant to the candidate's expertise and interest.
DEPARTMENT INFORMATION:
The Biology department at the University of Wisconsin - Whitewater offers Bachelor's degrees in Biology, with emphases in five areas: Cell/Physiology; Ecology, Evolution, and Behavior; Honors; Marine Biology and Freshwater Ecology; and Pre-Biomedical Professions. The Biology department has more than 300 majors and ~30 minors. We also serve the University by offering several general education courses and supporting the pre-health professions certificates in dental, medical, physician's assistant, optometry, and veterinary medicine. Our department is particularly supportive of undergraduate research with dedicated research labs for each of our faculty members, and many of our students have presented their work at national and regional meetings. COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
Well-qualified candidates can expect a starting salary within the range $60,000 - $65,000 commensurate with the candidate's education, related experience, and qualifications.
