Assistant Professor of Drawing - Tenure-Track - Art and Design - 21447

ATTENTION:

The Department of Art and Design in the College of Arts and Communication at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater seeks a tenure-track Assistant Professor (FA040) in the area of Drawing beginning August, 2025.

JOB DETAILS:

This is a full-time, nine-month, tenure-track position with teaching responsibilities for undergraduate courses within the Department of Art and Design. The instructional/teaching assignment includes 2D-Design (Foundations), all levels of traditional Drawing (I, II, III & IV) including Figure Drawing, and a general education lecture course, World of the Arts (WOTA). 

Special preference may be given to candidates who demonstrate an ability to develop and integrate digital drawing curriculum and/or the ability to teach illustration courses (in both digital and traditional media). We seek candidates from a variety of perspectives who will take an active interest in overseeing and guiding the Drawing program.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • MFA or equivalent terminal degree in Drawing or Studio Art with a focus in Drawing is required. ABD candidates may apply but must have their degree completed by the contract start date in August 2025; if not, they will be hired on a one-year contract with the understanding that their degree will be completed before January 2026 in advance of their first scheduled review 
  • Previous experience managing a Drawing dedicated classroom and a general work area

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous university-level teaching experience in all levels of Drawing
  • A sustained record of professional research activity

  • Ability to interact respectfully with people with diverse socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds
  • Willingness and ability to be an active participant in following applicable safety rules and regulations including necessary training and drills

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Teaching:

  • The successful candidate must teach full-time (3:3 semester teaching load). Each semester's teaching assignment will vary based on department and program needs and will/may include all levels of undergraduate Drawing, Two-Dimensional Design, and a WOTA course
  •  Faculty members are expected to serve as advisors/mentors to students and are encouraged to engage and support students in undergraduate research or other scholarly and creative activities

Research:

  • This position will be expected to pursue an active creative research agenda that engages undergraduate students, results in publications or exhibitions, and contributes to advancing the department, university, and the profession

Service:

  • This position will be expected to participate in activities that support the function of the department, college, university, and community relevant to the one's expertise and interests

Additional Duties:

  • Equipment maintenance
  • Budgeting and ordering supplies
  • Overseeing materials and inventory 
  • Maintaining a high standard for safety, cleanliness, and organization in the Drawing studio
  • Management of student workers/studio assistants and figure models

DEPARTMENT INFORMATION:

The NASAD accredited Department of Art and Design offers programs in studio/visual art, art history, graphic design, and media arts, serves approximately 300 majors and minors, and offers B.A., B.S., B.S.E., and B.F.A. degrees. The Department of Art and Design is a part of the College of Arts and Communication and employs approximately 20 full and part-time faculty and staff. The Department is in the Greenhill Center of the Arts, which also houses the Theatre/Dance and Music Departments, and the Crossman Gallery, a 2,500-square-foot facility presenting professional, juried, and student exhibitions.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

Well-qualified candidates can expect a starting annual salary of $53,000.
