Internships and Employment
Sustainability Office Internships
The Sustainability Office offers a variety of paid and unpaid internships every semester to students from diverse majors in areas that address various aspects related to campus sustainability. Our team is led by the Summer Interns who are assigned management roles over Upham Greenhouse, Campus Garden, and Nature Preserve. Students get experience relevant to ecology, environmental science, and horticulture while engaging their peers in our community service projects.
Interns also engage with their peers through social media/marketing, tabling, and event planning by working closely with various student organizations. Students majoring in areas like communication and marketing will get a chance to document our project and event successes and manage our platform content.
Using our campus as a living laboratory will allow students to directly apply class concepts to campus sustainability projects and build experience in a wider range of majors. Interns have opportunities to pursue additional project-based work in areas such as waste/recycling, transportation, food/dining, energy, data analytics, and more.
New positions are typically posted in November and April each year to correspond with the class registration calendar to work the following semester, giving students an opportunity to secure relevant experience in this field. Most interns will be offered unpaid hours to obtain credit for various majors, but additional paid opportunities will be offered and all students will be hired as university employees.

Community Health Internship Program (CHIP) Interns
Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) summer intern programs provide hands-on learning opportunities for students and assistance to local health departments. Programs in each AHEC region across the state are somewhat different, but each has at its core a partnership with local health departments to develop research projects and provide mentoring for health professions students interested in an intensive summer experience in community health.
CHIP Interns fulfill the Garden Outreach Coordinator position and work closely with area food pantries, including the campus Warhawk Pantry, to help clients understand more about the produce we donate throughout the summer. Interns also assist Pre-K students at the UWW Children’s Center garden. Job shadowing and site visits to local partners will provide interns with professional development opportunities.
The placement is 8 weeks during June and July, with an option to extend into August as a university employee. Applications open in mid-December each year. Visit their website if you're interested in applying.
