Upham Greenhouse and Plant Sales
Upham Greenhouse is located on the south end of the first floor of Upham Hall. The door to enter the greenhouse is at the very end of the Physics Department hallway. You can also find the exterior double door open during our public events for easier access.
Upham Greenhouse was constructed in 1981. The greenhouse is split into three separate growth rooms. The original purpose of the greenhouse is to house a botanical collection used by the Biological Sciences Department to further education in botany and horticulture. Two of the three growth rooms were dedicated to this purpose and a third growth room was used as a student laboratory space for individual or group projects. The Sustainability Office assumed management responsibility of the Upham Greenhouse in 2013. The growing conditions had deteriorated due to aged mechanical equipment, so a reinvestment in the core greenhouse functions was made in 2023. The botanical collection was reduced at this point to shift the greenhouse toward plant propagation.
Grow House 1 is dedicated to various short-term projects. Student projects must be registered with the Sustainability Office (email sustainability@uww.edu) to reserve bench space. Grow House 2 is focused on houseplant propagation. Bulk plants are available for sale for campus departments and organizations to offer as part of their programming. Grow House 3 contains various specimens in the botanical collection. The collection is open to the campus community to browse.
Upham Greenhouse also features a small classroom space to accommodate workshops and student organization meetings. This space has been heavily utilized by various students and has hosted a wide variety of workshops and tours for current and prospective students as well as community members. The Sustainability Office also operates from this location with various workstations and supplies dedicated to our projects and programs.
Purchase Plants
Welcome to the Sustainability Office's plant purchasing page. Through our role managing Upham Greenhouse, we regularly conduct plant sales to help support the overall operations and programming conducted by us and our partner student organizations. Your support is a valuable resource for us to continue improving this living laboratory and offer students experience in applied sciences to complement UW-Whitewater's academic programs.
We are available to answer any questions about our inventory via email at sustainability@uww.edu.
Our spring plant sale is back in Spring 2026! Use this form to place your order. If the form is not active, there are not any plants for sale. We will also continue to add new plants to the order form as they become available in the greenhouse.
Plant orders will be fulfilled in the order we receive them, but quantities are limited and subject to change based on growing conditions in our greenhouse. Pickup times and total amounts are confirmed with an invoice via email from the Sustainability Office. We will offer staffed pickup times and can only process payment via cash or check (payable to “UW-Whitewater”).
We are pleased to collaborate with university departments and student organizations to support workshops and events, provided we have sufficient time to propagate plants for your needs. To discuss details or place a request, please contact the Sustainability Office at sustainability@uww.edu.
In honor of the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, the UW-Whitewater Sustainability Office and City of Whitewater partnered by launching the “50 Trees for 50 Years” campaign in hopes of planting 50 trees throughout the campus and community. Trees will be planted in city parks, local elementary school grounds, and prominent areas of campus for current and future generations to enjoy.
The PEACE Tree Project provides tree saplings to students as part of the Earth Month and Arbor Day celebration every April. The intention is to have students or new alumni return to their hometowns after finishing their spring semester at UW-Whitewater and plant the tree. Over time, the trees will reduce carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and provide various environmental, social, and economic benefits to various communities.
The trees are delivered in early May to students who sign up using the interest form.
