Veterans Services

Welcome veterans and servicemembers. We are grateful for your service to our country and proud that you have chosen to learn more about our University to continue your educational and career goals.

Mission

Our role is to serve the educational and training needs of prospective and/or enrolled service members, veterans, their dependents or survivors, and other persons eligible to receive education benefits under the various Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) programs and the State of Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs (WDVA) programs. The Veterans Benefits Coordinator provides benefit and education counseling, program information, referral to various agencies, and certifies eligible students to receive education benefits under various state and federal programs while maintaining a congenial working relationship with the Department of Veterans Affairs and other agencies serving veterans.

The Registrar's Office is the certifying office for veterans benefits at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and UW-Whitewater at Rock County.

New students who are eligible for benefits but have not yet applied, may contact Amy Moore in the Registrar's Office.  A type of eligibility form would help the process (i.e. a DD214 - Notice of Separation).

Veterans Services Information Sheet - Academic  (Information Sheets must be submitted each semester you want to use your benefit.)

Call to Active Duty Procedure

Students called to active service during the course of a semester must choose one of the following options before departing for active service:

  • Any student called to active service during the course of a semester may elect to withdraw from the university with a full refund of all academic tuition and segregated fees and the prorated refund of room and board fees. Under this circumstance, no course credit and no course grades will be awarded.
  • Students called to active service on or prior to the last date to drop a full-term course (end of the eighth week) must withdraw with the full refund of academic tuitions and segregated fees and the prorated refund of board and room fees.
  • Students called to active service after the last date to drop a full-term course (end of the sixth week) may elect to take the grade of "Incomplete" in all courses. The time period allowed to satisfy the Incomplete Contracts would not, under this circumstance, begin until the date of release from active service. At any time within six months of the date of release from active service, the student may elect to withdraw from the university for the term in which he/she was called to active service. Students who elect this alternative are not eligible for the refund of academic tuition and segregated fees, but are eligible for the prorated refund of board and room fees.  The student will work directly with the instructor/s on their "contract agreement"- the INSTRUCTOR typically assigns a due date and conditions. Most incompletes typically allow undergraduates one full semester of extension and graduations 2 full semesters, unless the instructor specifies a different date.
  • Students called to active service after the last permissible day to withdraw from the university, as published in each semester's Schedule of Classes, may elect, with the permission of the course instructor, to accept the grades earned to that day in each of their courses. Under this circumstance, normal University policy for the award of "Incomplete" grades would apply. The time period allowed to satisfy Incomplete Contracts would begin at the date of release from active service. Students who elect this alternative are not eligible for the refund of fees.
  • Students called to active service keep their admission, e-mail and computer access open at UWW for two years from the date of their mobilization. After two years absence, students will have to reapply for admission.

Class Absences Policy

Students shall not be penalized for class absence due to unavoidable or legitimate required military obligations not to exceed two (2) weeks unless special permission is granted by the instructor.  Students are responsible for notifying faculty members of such circumstances as far in advance as possible and for providing documentation to the instructor to verify the reason for the absence.  The faculty member is responsible to provide reasonable accommodations or opportunities to make up exams or other course assignments that have an impact on the course grade.  For absences due to a student being deployed for active duty, please refer to the University's Active Duty Call-Up Procedure.

Federal Tuition Assistance is a benefit paid to eligible members of the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, and Coast Guard.  Each branch has its own criteria for eligibility, obligated service, application process' and restrictions.  This money is usually paid directly to the institution by the individual services.  Additionally, active duty members may elect to use the GI Bill “top-up” in addition to their service provided TA to cover high cost courses.  Students need approval from their ESO, military counselor, or Service branch before registering for classes.  Click on your branch below for guidance on how to apply for tuition assistance.

If you are not a current student apply to UW Whitewater as “Special No Credential” or “Degree Seeking”

Cost Verification Documents

UWW is approved by the State Approval Agency.  Veterans may receive a minimum of four (4) elective units if they received an honorable discharge after six months or more of service or if they were discharged into the National Guard or Reserves.  The discharge certificate (DD214) must be submitted to the Admissions Office to obtain these units.  Credit may be granted for military training and experience if the guide compiled by the American Council on Education so recommends.  Students should consult the Admissions Office about this type of credit.  Students submitting the AARTS, SMART or Community College of the Air Force transcripts may be evaluated to receive additional elective or degree credits.

Admissions. The Warhawk family isn’t just an expression — it’s how we live. Our faculty and staff work hard to ensure all Warhawks have access to the success they want in the college experience. With award-winning academic programs, a community location, and a passionate commitment to education, UW-Whitewater is home to more than 11,000 students every year.

Academic Advising & Exploration Center.  All UW-Whitewater students are assigned an academic advisor to assist with course selection and degree plans. New freshmen (or students with less than 24 credits) are assigned an advisor from within the Academic Advising & Exploration Center (AAEC) after the initial registration period at Warhawks SOAR (Student Orientation, Advising, and Registration). Check your WINS account for your advisor assignment. If your major is art, music, theatre, or Media Arts & Game Design, you will be assigned an advisor from your academic department. Students with over 24 credits are advised by a faculty member within their major department but are also welcome to utilize the AAEC for additional support. Lastly, we recognize that military and/or student veterans often have needs that are unique from other members of our student body.

Adult & Non-Traditional Student. Whether you’re starting college for the first time or returning to the classroom after many years away, it’s never too late to earn your degree at UW-Whitewater. As a returning adult student, you won’t need to submit your ACT or SAT scores. Instead, we complete a comprehensive review of your application to determine if we believe you can be successful in our academic environment.

Career Resources. Our programs and services in the Career and Leadership Development office are designed to assist students from the time they begin their career decision-making process until they find a job following graduation or beyond. Resources are available to help students research career alternatives, fine-tune resumes, translate military experience, locate internships, and work on job search and interviewing skills.

The Center for Students with Disabilities (CSD) mission is to be partners in creating an accessible learning community where students with disabilities have an equal opportunity to participate fully in all aspects of the educational experience. CSD serves UW-Whitewater students with physical, learning, sensory, psychological, or other disabilities. Should you require any special accommodations due to disability or injury, please check with a CSD specialist as soon as possible and then he/she can confidentially work with you regarding your needs. This early attention will help ensure everything is in place prior to your first day of class.

Financial Aid. In addition to Veteran's benefits, it is important to complete the FAFSA to determine eligibility for other types of financial aid.  Veterans and active duty service members are considered independent for financial aid purposes.  You may be required to submit a copy of active duty call-up papers or a copy of the DD214 to verify your status.

Financial Services. Financial Services serves as the financial hub for the campus.  Our unit is made up of four areas that provide exceptional customer service to students, staff, and external suppliers.  These four areas of focus are Accounting Services, Cashiers, Financial Literacy, and Student Accounts.  Our staff is made up of thirteen full-time employees and numerous student employees who collaborate with many of the departments on campus throughout the course of their workday.

Graduate School. Considering grad school? Whether it’s the next step after undergrad or improving your standing in your field, you need a program that is not just theoretical and discussing what “might work.” You need a program that is hands-on, giving you the skills to apply on the job from day one.

That is what you get at the School of Graduate Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. An education you can use to grow your expertise, expand your career options, and increase your lifetime earning potential - all without breaking the bank.

University Health & Counseling Servicesour staff strives to provide a safe, supportive, and helpful atmosphere to address the psychological, personal, and academic well-being of our students.  We welcome and respect students of all racial, ethnic, cultural, socioeconomic, sexual orientation, gender, spiritual beliefs, ability, and age groups.  As long as you are an enrolled student at UW-Whitewater, counseling is 100 percent free and confidential.

The University of Wisconsin - Whitewater Leadership and Military Science department develops students to become leaders in either the Army, Air Force or civilian career fields. There are three paths to obtain a minor in Leadership, and those paths are specific to the individual student on their desires to either work in the Army, Air Force or Civilian career path.

For those students interested in the ROTC Program, UW Whitewater offers leadership electives as well as a leadership minor. There are several additional opportunities in the leadership department to include; scholarships, Basic Course, Simultaneous Membership Program (SMP), and Guaranteed Reserve Forces Duty (GRFD).

VITAL Education and Training for Faculty and Staff

Faculty & Staff Resources

Military-affiliated students on our campus may include veterans, current National Guard or Reserves members, active duty personnel, and dependents of military service members. Our veteran students may be apprehensive about college and experience adjustment challenges as they transition to civilian and academic life.

Faculty members are the most consistent points of contact for student Veterans and are in the best position to notice if a Veteran is facing challenges. Faculty members can help student Veterans in many ways.

Tips for Showing Support

  • Recognize that a Veteran may be a nontraditional student with multiple roles, such as parent, spouse, employee, or Reservist/Guardsman. Encourage communication and show flexibility to help the Veteran cope with these many demands.
  • Veterans bring to the campus a variety of life experiences and skills, such as a capacity for leadership and teamwork. Encourage their participation in campus groups and activities.
  • Many Veterans leave higher education because they grow frustrated with the process and inability to obtain benefits, to interact with students after class and during breaks, or to use office hours and email. A relationship with a faculty member or adviser can be the single thing that helps a Veteran remain in school. Your relationship with a Veteran may help him or her feel more connected to the campus, navigate this new system, or feel support from an authority figure.
  • Student Veterans serving in the Reserve or National Guard must attend Battle Assembly one weekend a month, and annual training for two weeks during the year. Training could fall anytime during the semester. This could affect the student’s ability to complete an assignment or study for an exam. Consider providing some flexibility with assignments, tests, or attendance policies, based on a particular situation.

Adjustment Issues in the Classroom (Handout)

How will I know if a student needs mental health support?

Consider talking with student Veterans when you notice the following changes in behavior:

  • Withdrawal and isolation from other students
  • Extreme emotions or tearfulness
  • Confusion or irrational thinking
  • High anxiety, unhappiness, or disgust
  • Outbursts of negative behavior
  • Marked difference in appearance or poor hygiene
  • Excessive sleepiness
  • Written or oral mention of harming themselves or others

You have a relationship with the student Veteran that positions you to be a source of help in times of need. In many situations, expressing your concern and discussing the requirements of your course with the Veteran will be enough to resolve any problems. In other situations, additional help may be needed. Here are some tips for facilitating a referral to counseling services.
