Introduction to Chicanx Literature
This is a in introduction course to the foundations of Chicanx literature – literature written by and about Chicane/x people. During this course, the goal is to become confident in identifying what makes Chicanx literature Chicanx. We will practice this by interpreting Chicanx literature in relationship to social and historical contexts. Literature will include drama, fiction, and poetry. We’ll focus mostly on things written up through the 1980s. This is a three-week “winterim” course. It is fully online and asynchronous. You will be matched with a small cohort of other educators to do regular guided discussion. Your cohort can choose to do these discussions asynchronously and get asynchronous feedback and input from the instructor, or you can find a time for a virtual discussions group. The texts we’ll be reading are primarily written in English and Spanglish. All discussions are translingual. Dr. Pilar Melero (course instructor) is a Heritage Spanish / U.S. Spanish speaker who is fluent in Spanglish, Spanish, and English.
