Latinx Literature for Educators II
This course is intended for practicing teachers to deepen your knowledge of the literatures produced by U.S. citizens and/or U.S. residents of Latinx descent. We will explore the complex ways that (1) history, (2) group and individual experience, (3) cultural values and traditions, and (4) collisions and collaborations with other cultures in the US come together to shape Latinx identity, writing, and overall literary expression.
What narratives will you explore? Elvis fans and Madonna impersonators. Mexican immigrants and Chicana muralists. Long-distance truck drivers and punk-loving tattoo artists. The Botánica Oshún and it owner, Perla Portillo. Chino - a young man in Spanish Harlem who crosses paths with the legendary Willie Bodega, who is equal parts gangster, activist, and dreamer. A muy fregona Chicana newscaster and her loca and curandera sisters. Zoot Suiters, La Llorona, and other characters will all come together as we examine Latinx literature and culture through novels, films, poetry, and stories.
This is a fully remote course, taught by Latinx/Chicanx Studies and Spanish Heritage Language Professor Dr. Pilar Melero. It meets remotely Mon/Wed 12:30-1:45pm, but all sessions will be recorded and participation and interaction with the professor and other educators can be done asynchronously (or a combination of synchronous and asynchronous). January 20 - May 5, 2021.
You will be matched with a small cohort of other educators to do regular guided discussions. Your cohort can choose to do these discussions asynchronously and get asynchronous feedback and input from the instructor, or you can find a time for a virtual discussions group. The texts will be in English. All discussions are translingual. Dr. Pilar Melero (course instructor) is a Heritage Spanish / U.S. Spanish speaker who is fluent in Spanglish, Spanish, and English.
