Race & Ethnic Studies with Multiligual Learners Foundations (Part 1)
Heritage and bilingual courses can be settings for the powerful work of race and ethnic studies. When learners lives, perspectives, and experiences are reflected in critical ways in what they are learning about and the texts they explore, it will transform our classrooms into rich and powerful spaces, where youth take the lead in their own learning and language expansion. This course begins by asking: What does ethnic studies mean to your heritage/bilingual students and to you? How can an ethnic studies approach that centers critical language awareness and sustainable multilingualism create rich and healing spaces for collective learning and strength? What is possible when critical race theories inform the content, skills, and teaching methods we use in our teaching with multilingual learners? We will explore these questions in the first series of sessions (September-November). We will do this through examples of teaching and learning through intra-ethnic studies and critical race theories. These include concepts like intersectionality; storytelling, counterstorytelling, and testimonio; interest convergence; and indigenizing or truth & reconciliation pedagogies.
We will work together through these foundations for the first eight sessions (Part 1). Then, you will have an option to work with instructors to do a deep dive with a curated reading list geared to your interests and needs, or participate in Part 2: a 12-week “Introduction to Chicanx/Latinx Studies for Educators” series. After completing these, we will re-group and transform our learning into units of study that will be shared with one another so they can be adapted and used in our many contexts.
Introduction to Latinx/Chicanx Studies for Educators (Part 2) will be taught translingually with Spanish/English.
