IPMBA Police Cyclist Course
Bicycle officers need to ride whenever and wherever they are needed. Proper training is essential to an officer’s on-the-job performance and safety. It is also critical in reducing liability. The Police cyclist course provides bicycle officers with the skills they need to effectively serve their communities. The course is divided into eleven units: Bike Handling & Vehicular Cycling, Bike Fit, Group Riding, Hazard Recognition & Common Crashes, Obstacle Clearing & Riding Techniques, Patrol Procedures, Nighttime Patrol, Community Policing, Basic Maintenance, Legal Issues & Traffic Laws, and Fitness & Nutrition. This demanding class involves over 20 hours of on-bike time to develop and improve riding skills.
Applicants must be police officers currently assigned to bike patrol, officers applying to become members of a bike unit, or members of a department considering use of the bicycle. Class participants must read The Complete Guide to Public Safety Cycling – Second Edition (available through most on-line bookstores), prior to the start of the class.
Monday, May 19 - Thursday, May 22, 2024 | 7:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Preparing for the Event
Check In
Course check in is at 7:00 a.m. for check-in at Esker Hall, Room 1118 which is located at 420 N. Prairie Street, Whitewater WI 53190.
General Preparation
If you are a bit rusty or haven’t ridden a bicycle in quite some time, please get out and ride! Effort is essential, but effort alone will not guarantee success or certification. Familiarization is a key component and cornerstone of police cycling. Increase your familiarization right away and get out and ride.
At times the police cyclist course can be physically demanding, as can many parts of this job. Preparation for this course can make it much more enjoyable. Simply bicycling for 30 minutes a day a few times a week will help prepare and familiarize your body for this four-day course.
Please make sure you have a properly sized mountain bike that is in good mechanical condition. Ensure you have tools, pump, bicycle light, and spare tubes. (Refer to the equipment list in what to bring section). Dress appropriately. Weather in Wisconsin can vary from warm and balmy to cool and rain, so please plan ahead and dress for the weather. We will conduct the course in most any weather conditions – Please be prepared.
Generally, the last day we will ride the John Muir trail system in the Kettle Moraine – Southern Unit if open, after the written test we try to ride out there. If you personally own a mountain bike and want to bring it for this trail ride, it is encouraged but not mandatory. More info on the trails can be found on the Biking KMS trails.
Certification
IPMBA Certification is available to sworn police officers who successfully complete the practical test, earn a score of 76% or better on the written test, become members of IPMBA, and submit applications for certification accompanied by the appropriate fees (included in the cost of the course).
