Professor Brian Huels joined our faculty in Fall of 2017, after teaching first at Rockford University in Illinois. He teaches Accounting Foundations (701),* which he enjoys very much. He believes having a strong foundation is key to mastery of any topic. This course is specifically designed for students who earned non-business undergraduate degrees. Therefore, many of Brian’s MBA students have not had previous academic exposure to accounting. He enjoys showing students how much fun accounting can be, and how important the content is, as accounting concepts are pervasive in business today.
Although his class is only two credits, Brian manages to have students analyze small business financial statements, look at publicly traded companies, and even view Shark Tank as a tool. Students get to see examples (good or bad) of how to present accounting information in a boardroom. These hands-on projects help students grasp the foundations necessary for future course work. In addition, Brian believes students need strong technical knowledge, interpersonal skills, and a passion to make a difference. He believes presentations skills—being concise and clear—are crucial as well.
Brian’s research interests focus on classroom activities and student learning. His passion for teaching drives his research interests, encouraging him to discover the best ways to deliver content and maximize student learning. He also strives to gain a better understanding of the decision making processes of individuals, including why one may choose to engage in unethical practices.
When not on the job, Brian serves on the board of Financial Executives International (Rockford, IL Chapter) as the Academic Chair. He is the lead organizer of MeltFest, an annual event in Rockford celebrating the end of winter that includes many family-friendly activities. He enjoys being active, which is easy to do with his wife and two daughters, ages 8 and 6. He especially enjoys watersports and running.
Brian’s mom, Marion, was part of the reason he chose academia. Although she passed away in 2018, she had written down this quote, which Brian wanted to share: “Remember to enjoy life – it is too short to waste. Do your best, but be satisfied with your limits. Remember that you can never fail in life, only quit.” This is great advice for all of us.
