 The Center for Students with Disabilities at the University of Wisconsin - Whitewater seeks a Transition Outreach Specialist (Admissions and Recruitment Coordinator II, AE084)

 

 

JOB DETAILS:

 

 

The Transition Outreach Specialist for Recruitment of Students with Disabilities assists prospective students in navigating the college selection process. This is a 12-month, full-time position that reports to the Director or Associate Director of the Center for Students with Disabilities and will be responsible for recruiting, admitting, and enrolling a talented and diverse student body. This position will establish and maintain relationships with prospective students, parents, high school counselors, and special education case managers, and will work with students to assist with applying to both the university and the Center for Students with Disabilities for their region.  This position is responsible for continuing, developing, and implementing targeted outreach efforts for students with disabilities. The individual will present information to prospective students during scheduled daily visit presentations and regional transition fairs, will assist during campus open house events, coordinate an annual conference, and will perform other duties as assigned by the director or designee. Domestic travel is required, especially during the fall and spring recruitment seasons. 

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

 

Minimum Qualifications

·         Earned Bachelor’s degree

·         Valid driver’s license (or ability to obtain a valid driver’s license)

·         Minimum of one-year experience in disability services, admissions, recruitment, higher education, or related field

·         Strong written communication and public speaking skills

·         Work within the Social Justice Model of Disability and support all student identities within the Division of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Support Programs.

 

Preferred Qualifications

·         Master’s Degree in Higher Education, Special Education, or Counseling

·         Strong organizational and event-planning skills

·         Professional experience working with students and/or individuals from diverse backgrounds

·         Effective interpersonal skills and ability to establish positive relationships with students, staff, and faculty

·         Work collaboratively with Admissions staff on behalf of students with disabilities

·         Experience working with students with disabilities

·         Experience working in higher education

  • Willingness and ability to be an active participant in following applicable safety rules and regulations including necessary training and drills
  • Ability to interact respectfully with people from diverse socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds

 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

 Specific Duties:

The following examples of duties and responsibilities illustrate the general range of tasks assigned to the position but are not intended to define the limits of required duties. Other essential duties may be assigned consistent with the general scope of the position.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties:

·         Market, recruit, and provide customer support to new freshman prospects and applicants through face-to-face interactions, small and large group presentations, educational fairs, telephone and email inquiries, and high school visits.  This includes extensive travel primarily in Wisconsin and surrounding regions.

·         Establish working relationships with high school counselors, case managers, school nurses, other community stakeholders, and special services administrators in the assigned regions.

·         Coordinate prospective student programming to further the commitment to students with disabilities at UWW.

·         Create and implement effective communication strategies with school districts, Special Educators, Children’s Hospitals, DVR counselors, 2 years and Technical Colleges

·         Use data and current trends to strategically market to and recruit high school students with disabilities within the region.

·         Review applications and make collaborative admission decisions.

·         Conduct intake appointments leading to a service eligibility determination and recommendations for reasonable accommodations as appropriate.

·         Assist students in understanding their legal rights and responsibilities.

·         Promote student self-reliance and the development of appropriate self-advocacy skills.

·         Facilitate communication between faculty, staff, and students with disabilities on access and accommodation issues and provide ongoing consultation and problem-solving assistance to faculty and staff in the provision of appropriate services and accommodations. 

·         Develop new and effective methods for resolving complex disability-related accommodation and adjustment issues.

·         Assist and monitor student application processing and data entry.

·         Coordinate Opening Horizons Conference for students with disabilities in the spring.

·         Work with the Office of Admission to help coordinate schools to visit campus each fall for the targeted population.

·         Field telephone, and email inquiries from potential students, school k12 staff, community stakeholders, and families, and deliver informational presentations to students who come to campus for a tour.

·         Meet with prospective students and their parents during campus visits.

·         Be familiar with university policies and procedures, especially Admissions, Housing, Financial Aid, and First Year Experience, to communicate effectively with prospects.

·         Participate in professional organizations, conferences, and workshops when appropriate.

·         Additional duties as prescribed by the Director or designee of CSD.
