Continue the Warhawk Tradition
Sustainable funding is critical for UW-Whitewater’s Department of Geography, Geology and Environmental Science to address the educational resources and opportunities students need to succeed.
The Herbert James Lundin Endowment Fund will provide resources to attract qualified instructors and enable investments in technology. It will also provide funding for student scholarships, field trips, travel study and global experiences.
This new fund was spearheaded by two UW-Whitewater alumni, Ron Binning and Steve Burrows. While serving on the Dean’s Advisory Board, Ron and Steve became interested in creating a predictable funding source that the Department Chair and Dean could use to capitalize on timely opportunities.
Herbert J. Lundin served UW-Whitewater for years as a faculty member in the Department of Geography and as the Interim Associate Dean of Faculties and Coordinator of Curriculum Matters. In 1971, Professor Lundin was awarded the W.P. Roseman Excellence in Teaching Award. He passed away in 2019 at the age of 91.
Dr. Lundin was much more than a teacher of geography. His classroom was inspirational because he talked about life (and geography) in a way I hadn’t experienced before UW-Whitewater. He not only discussed the rivers, lakes, mountains, and other features of geography, he brought geography to LIFE. When he would discuss a subject, he could make it feel as though you were there.
Ron Binning ‘70
The Dr. Lundin Endowment Fund will support the experience-based, beyond the textbook learning opportunities, and the connection of classroom studies to the real world for students of Geography which Dr. Lundin so passionately believed in.
Steve Burrows ‘74

Professor Rex Hanger receives Regents Award honoring outstanding UW-System teachers for 2019.
This award recognizes outstanding teaching and is the UW System’s highest recognition for members of its instructional staff. During his 19-year career at UW-Whitewater, Dr. Hanger has been a practitioner of multiple high-impact practices to support student success.
As a geography major, Mike Baker ‘19, created a digital map of the more than 1,700 trees on the UW-Whitewater campus. Inspired by the Salisbury Idea, this digital map not only provides information on tree locations but will serve as a critical guidepost for the growth of campus sustainability.
