Achievement Gap
The mission of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater includes “…[creating and maintaining] a positive and inviting environment for multicultural students, students with disabilities, and nontraditional students, and [providing] support services and programs for them.” To achieve this goal, we provide the university community with reports on the academic achievement of different sub-groups of our student population. This includes reports examining how the opportunity and readiness gaps impact our students. The Achievement Gap refers to the ways in which factors such as gender, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, familial situations, etc., contribute to lower educational attainment for certain groups of students. The National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education defines the Readiness Gap as “…the disparity between the skills and knowledge that students gain in high school versus the skills and knowledge that colleges and universities expect.”
