Dr. Ozgul Kartal is associate professor of mathematics education. Prior to her appointment at UW-Whitewater, Dr. Kartal taught mathematics at K-12 schools, in high-needs and under-served areas, for more than seven years. She has taught a broad range of mathematics, mathematics education, and educational research courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Her research interests include teaching and learning of mathematics for students who are not traditionally successful, how students from underrepresented communities could maintain interest and persistence in mathematics by means of problem solving and mathematical modeling, and implementation of effective mathematics teaching practices. Dr. Kartal publishes articles primarily in mathematics education and STEM education journals. She currently serves as a reviewer for Journal of Mathematics Teacher Education, Journal of Engineering Education, Investigations in Mathematics Learning, and School Science and Mathematics.
Dr. Kartal holds a Ph.D. in Mathematics Education from Illinois Institute of Technology; M.S. in Applied Mathematics from Illinois Institute of Technology; and B.S. in Mathematics from Middle East Technical University.
