That's where the FYE Office student employees come in. Our student employees help us provide the best start for new Warhawks and help guide them on the path of success.

The mission of First Year Experience (FYE) at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater is to provide guidance to students and their families in their transition to the campus community. We serve as a campus resource that provides engaging, inclusive, and academically integrated transitional experience to enhance student development.

FYE provides the following programs and services:

  • Warhawks SOAR (Student Orientation, Advising, and Registration)
  • Warhawk Welcome (new student orientation)
  • Mentor Programs
  • New Student Seminar
  • Student Leadership Positions (Hawk Squad, Peer Mentor, Team Transfer, Student Crew, Purple Pit Crew)
  • Family Programs (Family Fest, Newsletter, Calendar, etc.)

FYE offers two Graduate Assistantships (Positions Filled for 2025-2026 Academic Year)

Hawk Squad leaders are resources to new students and family members regarding academic programs, student services and co-curricular activities. They lead new students through Warhawks SOAR (Student Orientation, Advising, and Registration) and assist with the implementation of Warhawk Welcome and Family Fest.

Peer Mentors serve as a resource to new students during their first semester at UW-Whitewater, leading them through Warhawk Welcome, joining them in their New Student Seminar section, and checking-in individually. Throughout the fall semester, Peer Mentors remain in contact with new students to answer questions and help them feel at home on campus.

Team Transfer is made up of Transfer Orientation Leaders, Rock Orientation Leaders, and Transfer Peer Mentors that help new transfer students feel at home during their transition to UW-Whitewater. Transfer Orientation Leaders serve as a resource to transfer students during Warhawk Welcome and their first week on campus. Transfer Peer Mentors stay with transfer students throughout the fall semester, join them in their New Student Seminar section, and check-in with each student individually.

The Purple Pit Crew (PPC) is a paid position that works behind the scenes to deliver Warhawk Welcome, our fall orientation program. Specifically, PPC facilitates Hawk Fest as well as the painting of Warhawk Drive. This leadership opportunity is a great way to get involved and have fun with other students! All members of the Purple Pit Crew earn $9/hour worked, receive the signature PPC t-shirts, and get to move into the residence halls early!

  • Represent UW-Whitewater and the Office of First Year Experience in a professional manner and with a positive attitude
  • Participate with preparations for First Year Experience events (Warhawks SOAR (Student Orientation, Advising, and Registration), Warhawk Welcome, Family Fest, First Gen Celebration and New Student Seminar)
  • Provide excellent customer service through walk-ins, phone calls, email and social media
  • Assist with wide-ranging tasks and projects to improve your skills in marketing, social media, data analysis, and more.

FYE's Summer Orientation Intern is a key position in our office's success during one of our busiest times of the year. This intern is a returning student staff member to FYE and assists mainly with SOAR (Student Orientation, Advising, and Registration) events and office management.
