Learning Assistant Training

The length of this varies based on the qualifications of applicants and the nature of the position; for example, education majors usually require less training. Along similar lines, different positions require different training.

Ideally, education majors are hired for this position.

  • Required to read the "Active Learning Strategies" training manual and attend orientation meetings.
  • Paired with senior S.I. tutor for Tutor Mentoring.
    • Required to build content knowledge via peer and self-guided training
    • Required to attend senior tutor's S.I. sessions and reflectively journal/discuss the process.
    • After hiring, tutor will still work with his/her mentor in developing weekly lesson plans for the sessions.

  • Applicant submits samples of writing to be used in "tutorials" where the director or a senior writing tutor models the tutorial process.
  • The applicant takes a grammar exam that will be used for a customized training plan.
  • Applicant takes MLA/APA/Chicago-style documentation exam that will be used for a customized remediation plan.

The specific nature of this varies applicant by applicant; it usually involves a "customized" plan based on areas of weakness. For example:

  • Peer and self-guided training to build content knowledge.
  • Development of Communication Skills
  • Learning about the pedagogy of tutoring (reading, abstracting, and commenting on texts and articles).

Even after the tutor officially begins tutoring, the training process continues in the following ways:

  • Peer and self-guided training to build content knowledge and communication skills.
  • Scripted Observations by the office staff and director
  • Tutor-to-Tutor Mentoring (both being mentored and serving as mentors)
  • Faculty Sponsorship
  • Tutor-to-Tutor Reflective Feedback Exchanges (take turns observing each other; discussion follows)
  • Tutor Development Meetings (examples include: Working with LD Clients, Article Presentation Forum, Working with International Students, Dealing with Difficult Clients, Mental Health Matters, etc.).

Dane Crouse, Writing Tutor, Office Staff, & Campus Tutorial Services Graduate Assistant Fall 2019-Spring 2024

At my SOAR (student orientation) day in summer of 2019, I inquired about becoming a writing tutor at the Campus Tutorial Services table, and by the end of the summer, I was hired! I feel incredibly grateful to have obtained an on-campus job before starting my undergraduate education; it made the experience all the more enjoyable. Throughout my time with Campus Tutorial Services, I have been a writing tutor (in-person and virtually through the pandemic), an in-class tutor, a supplemental instructor, an academic coach, an office staff member, and a Graduate Assistant. These roles have provided me with a plethora of experiences and valuable lessons that I will take with me to my future. As a psychology major during my undergraduate education, I did not anticipate how beneficial a job with Campus Tutorial Services would be. It taught me so much about myself and how I interact with others, how to communicate effectively, and stay organized with my time between studies, work, and social life. With my experience with Campus Tutorial Services, I now have a much greater understanding of social dynamics, collaboration, leadership, organization, and social relationships. I could not be more thankful. 

As I continue my education into graduate school to become a mental health counselor, I have no doubt that I will consistently reflect on my time with Campus Tutorial Services. I have had many positive experiences and I know that what I have learned will help me in my future career. Most notably, I will always remember the amazing people and lasting relationships I have built throughout my nearly 5-year tenure with Campus Tutorial Services. I have no doubts that the friends I have gained while working here will last a lifetime. I look forward to my future, but I will reflect appreciatively on my time with Campus Tutorial Services, as it provided me with many opportunities of growth.

I first became a math tutor in the Spring of 2021 when I was recommended by my math professor, and I was shocked with the impact it would have on me. I started working as a math tutor, a supplemental instructor and ran the walk-in math center in the Fall of 2021. As an Elementary Education major, being a tutor helped me to feel more comfortable around students and working one-on-one with various levels of math. I also had the opportunity to be a supplemental instructor for 2 semesters, which developed my confidence in working with whole-class situations. Being a supplemental instructor required me to be in every class that the students would attend, take notes, and prepare for exam review sessions. As part of a supplemental instructor, I also helped to create study guides and practice sheets for students, which taught me how to create purposeful reviews that accommodate all students.

I have noticed a difference in my preparation for student teaching and for my career. I taught myself how to think about math in several aspects; I learned how to communicate professionally with students and with other teachers, and I learned the importance of being objective among students. I feel more prepared and ready for my career since I was considered a role model that students could look to for help. The math center was something I enjoyed being a part of and helped me to build relationships with students. My experiences at the Campus Tutorial Services have always remained positive. It also aided my growth in professionalism and individuality more than anticipated. I loved being a math tutor and a supplemental instructor and I appreciate that I was one of many to provide an impact and encouragement for students and their future careers. I was able to provide growth and growth mindset in students which has left me with many amazing and encouraging memories. I hope that my future endeavors will benefit from the work I put in during this experience.

 Being a tutor is not just a job, it's an academic adventure. Working with students from all backgrounds, of all majors, and in all walks of life has truly been one of the most rewarding experiences I have had the opportunity to take part in. Not only was it great practice for me as an education major, but tutoring was also an eye opening experience to the world around me. I had the chance to improve upon my teaching techniques as well as interpersonal communication skills that are incredibly useful in daily situations as well as in the classroom.

Even though I was the one helping other students with the planning of papers and presentations, the paraphrasing of information, the corrections and editing leading to the final product, I know I have been learning alongside those students as well. Tutoring is something I would recommend to any student who is interested in helping others succeed while at the same time growing personally, making tutoring a uniquely positive experience for all parties.

I have been a mathematics tutor since my freshman year of college. This was one of the most beneficial positions I have ever held. I have always had a passion for mathematics. This position led me to my decision of pursuing mathematics as a minor, and I couldn't be happier about this choice. I was confident from the start of my tutorial services. It was such a comfortable and inviting environment to work in. It has helped me grow not only as an adult, but also as a professional. Tutoring is a flexible job, which means time management is important.

Tutoring had taught me how to balance school and work. Furthermore, it has prepared me for my major of education. I feel prepared creating lesson plans, teaching in front of a group, and answering questions about the topic. This is exactly what I will be doing as a math middle school teacher and I am confident going into the field. Nothing is more rewarding than helping someone through a problem and seeing their light bulb click. Being a tutor is a constant reminder of why I went into the field of education, to help everyone learn. The experience alone is worth the position. I am ready to take what I have learned as a tutor and apply it into the classrooms.

 My tutoring experience at UW-Whitewater is by far one of the most rewarding and memorable experiences as a student. I had the opportunity to meet with others who were just as passionate about the German language and culture as I am and this, in turn, has promoted the exchange of international ideas and ways of life. As a tutor, I learned that one doesn’t have to know all of the answers, and that not knowing allows not only the student to see that others may be in the same boat, but also that teaching and tutoring are learning processes in itself. I believe it is important to enjoy what you are tutoring, but also to be flexible in knowing that there is always more to learn.

The knowledge that I acquired while tutoring is something that I will take with me into my future studies and career. Patience, creativity, and persistence are all strengthened traits I will take with me to Germany this year while abroad on a Fulbright Teaching Assistantship grant, and I hope that students there will be as knowledge thirsty as here. Overall, the tutoring position at UW-Whitewater has altered my perspective as a student and as a teacher, and I know no other opportunity would have provided me with the same insight I received while tutoring here.

When I first started out, I didn't realize the impact this job would cause. As a tutor and supplementary instructor for four years, I have been able to succeed in some many other aspects of my life because of it. I became a better communicator and public speaker as well as having way more confidence in both of those areas. I was able to stay up-to-date with my accounting knowledge, which helped me immensely when I was studying for the CPA exam. I feel like the reason I passed all for sections of the CPA was partially due to teaching the material for so long.

By far the most rewarding and beneficial part of this job is the people you meet. I have become close friends with many of the students I have tutored and have been told countless times that I was the main reason they passed the class. I loved this job and would recommend it to anyone that has a desire to teach others, a desire to help others, and a desire to learn. When you start you think that this jobs is just helping others, but in reality it helps you way more.
