Sales education goes beyond theoretical learning; it is designed to provide real-world experience. Every semester, students step into high-stakes internal sales competitions that challenge them to apply what they’ve learned, engage with industry professionals, and prepare for a successful career in sales. These competitions are not only a way for students to test their skills, but are also vital to their development as future leaders in the business world.
These events provide students with the opportunity to sharpen their communication skills, think on their feet, and build confidence in a competitive but supportive environment. Sales professionals know that handling objections, building relationships, and closing deals under pressure are essential to success. Competitions allow students to practice their skills in realistic settings, give them a taste of what it’s like to pitch solutions, engage with potential clients, and refine their sales techniques—all with direct feedback from industry experts.
Participating in the internal competitions also opens the door to valuable networking opportunities. Many of the industry professionals and company representatives who serve as judges or buyers for the pitch events are actively looking to hire talented students for internships and full-time positions. As a result, these competitions often become career-defining moments, providing students not only with practical skills but also with pathways to job offers and internships that could shape their futures.
Looking back at the past academic year, the sales competitions held in both the fall and spring semesters were marked by strong performances and exciting moments. Students of all levels participated, from first-time competitors to returning contestants who demonstrated significant growth. The positive outcomes of the competitions, from job placements to personal confidence-building, are a testament to the value these events bring to students and the community.
The success of UW-Whitewater’s sales competitions is the result of a collaborative effort between students, faculty, sponsors, and industry judges. The Institute for Sales Excellence provides students with a solid foundation through rigorous coursework, while faculty and industry professionals ensure that the competitions mirror real-world sales challenges. Corporate sponsors play a critical role, offering invaluable support and industry insights that help students refine their skills and prepare for careers in sales. By working closely with sponsors and judges, students receive hands-on experience and constructive feedback, helping them grow in a high-pressure, real-world setting.
Over the years, these competitions have evolved to reflect the changing landscape of the sales industry, incorporating new trends and formats to ensure students are well-prepared for future challenges. This adaptability ensures that the Sales Program at UW-Whitewater remains a leader in shaping future sales professionals. Corporate sponsors not only invest in the students’ growth but also benefit from fresh perspectives and emerging talent, making these events a win-win for both students and industry partners.
The impact of these competitions extends far beyond the students who participate. They play a critical role in enhancing the reputation of UW-Whitewater’s Sales Program, which is consistently ranked among the top in the nation. The competitions not only highlight the skills and dedication of the students but also demonstrate the strength and innovation of the program as a whole. By showcasing the caliber of its students, UW-Whitewater’s Sales Program reinforces its place as a leader in sales education.
“Even if you're not a sales emphasis, at some point you are going to have to go into somebody's office and try to sell them something. Whether it's an interview, promotion, pitch, etc. it's important that you know how to build rapport, set an agenda, and deal with objections. The internal sales competitions here provide you with that foundational knowledge you’ll need in the real world” said Rafa Alvarez-Reyes (Junior Marketing BBA). Lauryn Siedel (Sophomore Marketing BBA), one of the students in charge of coordinating the competitions, said “Internal Sales Competitions are the best way to enhance your sales skills. Going through the real life scenarios has helped me to prepare for my internship and jobs in the future. I can say without a doubt that participating in these competitions has been the best thing I’ve done in college so far.” The AMA Sales Corps President, Taylor Wojcinski (Sophomore Marketing BBA) highlights the opportunities participating in sales competitions provides, saying “You get the chance to step outside of your comfort zone and put your skills to the test alongside the other talented students at UW-W. My favorite part is getting feedback on my performance from the judges so I know what I can improve on for next time!”.
The internal competitions are a part of the year long Sales Cup competition. Students earn points towards the Sales Cup by doing things like competing in both internal and external competitions, attending AMA events, and taking a job or internship with an AMA partner. At the end of the semester, the points are added up, and scholarships are given to qualifying students. All of the scholarships are sponsored by an AMA partner, which connects professionals with accomplished students that are going to be looking for employment in the coming years.
For those considering participating in the next competition, past winners, judges, and faculty offer advice: be prepared, embrace feedback, and seize the opportunity to grow. Every competition is a chance to learn, improve, and challenge yourself to become the best version of a sales professional. The lessons learned and connections made during these events will serve students well long after the competition ends.
