ACCOUNTING

Bachelor’s Degree Programs

Become fluent in the “language of business.”

Accounting is more than number crunching. Today’s accounting professionals are strategic, tech savvy and data driven. They help businesses and organizations prepare and communicate financial information to guide strategic decisions and solve business problems.

Accountants are consistently in demand, so they enjoy job security and good income. Further, rapid technological development is affecting the role of the accountant, with routine accounting tasks being automated as platforms such as artificial intelligence and blockchain become more widespread. This will increase accountants’ efficiency so that accountants can spend their time on more value-added advisory and analytical tasks.

An accounting education designed to meet the needs of today’s employers crucial to your success. That’s what you’ll find in UW-Whitewater’s AACSB-accredited accounting degree program: an evolved and updated curriculum designed to provide you with foundational knowledge and technical skills you need for a fruitful career.

In addition to our on-campus program, we offer the same high-quality curriculum and instruction in an online format.

Jobs. Jobs. Jobs.

Why major in Accounting at UW-Whitewater?

High-quality academics

We’re the largest business school in Wisconsin, and both our college and accounting program have earned AACSB accreditation, a designation earned by only about 2% of business schools worldwide. All of our business majors take an advanced business core to prepare them for a range of business challenges and career opportunities, as well as to gain a solid understanding of what happens at every level of an organization.

Our broad experience

Our faculty and staff bring a wide variety of work experiences, research interests, and professional backgrounds to the program. They have extensive experience at Big 4 firms and large corporations, as well as smaller CPA firms and companies. Most are CPAs, and some have additional professional licenses. UW-Whitewater students are taught directly by subject-matter experts in their courses — this distinguishes our program from others that use teaching assistants in the classroom.

CPA exam and licensure readiness

Many people pursue an accounting degree to become a CPA, or certified public accountant. To be eligible for CPA licensure, you need to complete at least 150 college credits; a typical bachelor’s degree program requires 120 credits. At UW-Whitewater, you can achieve the required coursework for CPA eligibility by adding a second major in the business field (such as finance, business analytics, or information technology). You may also apply for UW-Whitewater’s MBA with an accounting emphasis.

Extensive career and leadership development

The UWW career services team engages with our students throughout their time as a Warhawk, whether you need help finding the right major or minor, an internship or your first full-time accounting job after graduation.

Among the professional and career development programs is an annual Accounting Career Fair, which brings representatives from firms of all sizes to campus each fall. The office also offers resume and interview help, graduate school application assistance and even access to professional attire through the Warhawk Success Closet for showing up to interviews with confidence.

Alumni connections and financial support

UW-Whitewater accounting alumni are a proud and professionally active group. In addition to an annual accounting alumni reunion, we also operate an accounting alumnus mentoring program, connecting students with Warhawks already in the industry.

Thanks to generous support from donors and sponsoring firms, our accounting majors can apply for dozens of scholarships. In fact, we awarded scholarships to nearly 70 students this year.

One scholarship that is unique is our “first-time pass” scholarships, where scholarships are given to an underclass student in honor of an upperclass student or recent alum who has passed one or more sections of the CPA exam on their first attempt.

Hands-on learning adds up

Internships
We encourage our accounting students to pursue internships during their junior or senior year. These are real-world learning opportunities available in various sizes of public accounting firms, in addition to corporate and government settings. Accounting internships also open doors: many students receive employment offers from their internship sites.

Service-learning
As an accounting major, you can gain practical e-filing experience while serving the community — and earning credit — through VITA, the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program.
